Overcoming a Missed Opportunity

Sometimes, you’ll miss an opportunity. Whether it was big or small, missing out on your next big business deal can leave a bad taste in your mouth. But luckily, there are ways to overcome this missed opportunity that will help you bounce back more quickly and stronger than ever.

Keep Your Emotions in Check

Missing an opportunity can make you feel a lot of different emotions. From being frustrated you didn’t get it to confusion about how the deal fell through and even regret because maybe a mistake was made at some point during the process. All of those emotions can circulate in your head, building a fear that you will miss the next big opportunity. Keeping those emotions in check will help you stay focused on continuing your successful business. Blair Thomas, co-founder of EMB says, “When I have carried around too many regrets, it has impacted my ability to see new ventures.” Accepting that the opportunity is gone and continuing to move forward will help you to build your business.

Stay Positive

Focusing on the positives can be another way to help you move on. It could be positives from the situation, such as your team becoming closer because of the work you all did together on the project. Or it could be something about your business. Although you missed this one opportunity, you may have surpassed your sales goal for the quarter.

Writing down a list of the positives and keeping it with you or on your desk will help remind you that this isn’t the end of the world and there are more opportunities ahead. Smiling can also help you continue to keep staying positive. Evidence shows that smiling, even if it is fake, can help you feel calmer during a stressful situation.

Learn from it

When it comes to the missed opportunity, learning from it is the best thing you can do. Take a step back from the emotions and reflect on the situation as a whole. Analyzing what went wrong and what could have changed will keep you focused on the future, not the past. Prepare a list of actions that could have been taken, or questions that could have been asked. Once you feel you understand why the opportunity was missed, move on to new opportunities without worrying about repeating the same mistake. That lost opportunity can turn into a motivator to do even better in the future.
